The Hunger Games keeps the games going strong with a second top finish at the movie box office

The Hunger Games drop almost 60% from the previous week. Thus far, The Hunger Games has earned nearly $252 million in box office receipts since opening less than 10 days ago. We doubt The Hunger Games will surpass The Dark Knight, Titanic and or Avatar. However, the futuristic movie captured a huge fan following leading up to the movie premiere. In the second week in release, The Hunger Games crushed the competition, making $62 million in ticket sales.

The Wrath of Titans, a sequel to Sam Worthington's Clash of the Titans movie, finished second with $33 million in ticket sales. In any other weekend, The Wrath of the Titans would have finished number #1 with better ticket sales. The opening weekend for Julia Roberts' Snow White movie, Mirror Mirror, delivered a third place finish good enough to make an estimated $21 million in receipts.

21 Jump Street continues to entertain movie fans and 21 Jump Street television fans. The action comedy finished in fourth place with $14.3 million in ticket sales. Dr. Seuss' The Lorax finished in fifth place to collect $7.8 million in ticket sales, accumulating an estimated $189 million on total receipts to date. We expect The Lotax to cross the $200 million market next Sunday or Monday.

Box office flop John Carter is an utter disappointment, earning only $1.9 million to finish sixth after its fourth week in release. As predicted early on, the Disney movie is easily on pace to become the next Waterworld movie. The $300 million production budget as well as additional expenses tied into marketing and distribution will make the overrated science fiction action adventure movie the worst mistake ever when the cost to earnings ratio are calculated.

Act of Valor earned another $1 million to score a seventh place finish at the box office. Another box office dud A Thousand Words earned less than $1 million to deliver an eighth place finish. Salmon Fishing in the Yemen finished ahead of the two movies above with an estimated $1.3 million in ticket sales; however, the movie is still in limited release. October Baby is yet another movie that collected ticket sales that ranks it in the top 10, though the limited release under 1,000 screens push it outside of the top performers.

Next box office weekend, Titanic 3D and American Reunion will battle The Hunger Games to finish first at the box office. Visit next week to read the box office estimates. Thanks for visiting. Have a great week!
